What do you get when you put two determined and talented island girls together in the heart of East London and throw in for good measure, the latest fashion designs from around the Caribbean? Well aside from an empty pocket and a new exciting wardrobe, you get a taste of Caribbean fashion and a sense that you are somewhat contributing to something incredible and special.
Curated by Mel Gabriel of Caribbean Lookbook – a platform for emerging Caribbean fashion designers, with support from ChantiMedia, this three day event held in a stylish chic studio showcased designs by Caribbean fashion icon, Meiling from Trinidad and Tobago. With other pieces from designers Trefle Designs based out in the British Virgin Islands, accessories from the Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Barbados, unique prints from Shop Shari in Trinidad, Paradise Prints from St Lucia and Peta Odini based out in St Vincent and the Grenadines, least not forgetting stand out jewellery from Trinidad’s AKONG London, to name a few this was the first of it’s kind pop-up event to be held in London.
Much more than a pop-up shopping experience, this collaborative event sought not only to showcase the best fashion and accessories brands from creators of Caribbean heritage, but presented an interactive retail event that had some of the designers popping by to meet some of the visitors that had ventured down to the bohemian styled loft serving as a studio and for the designers themselves to network amongst each other. For ShopShari, a brand inspired by print, this event proved to be the perfect opportunity for the Trinidadian based designer to experience and see the market outside of Trinidad, finding out what worked best and what didn’t.
With a tremendous response from fashion lovers and a heartfelt appreciation from the organisers and designers present, this event has surpassed the imagination of the fashion curator, who has managed to bridge the gap and has successfully opened the door for people in London to discover new Caribbean brands. With Caribbean fashion making strides across the world, this is just the beginning of great things to come.
